4 daily actions to increase it!

Being eco-responsible on a daily basis also means choosing carefully your equipment so that it is sustainable. You thus limit the quantity of your waste and the use of natural and synthetic materials.

A mattress, an imposing product which is not always easy to process for waste reception centers, is a perfect example. With simple gestures and the right choice at the time of purchase, you can extend its lifespan by several years.

What is the lifespan of a mattress?

The lifespan of a mattress depends on many things: the brand, your build, your use …

But, there are estimated ranges depending on the type of mattress. Thus, the service life is estimated:

  • 8 to 12 years for a natural latex mattress
  • 6 to 10 years for a synthetic latex mattress
  • 5 to 10 years for a foam mattress
  • 3 to 7 for a pocket sprung mattress.

To optimize this lifespan, follow the advice below.

The right actions to increase the lifespan of your mattress

Clean your mattress

Many people never wash their mattresses. However, efficient cleaning is possible. Put a little hydrogen peroxide mixed with water on a sponge and scrub your mattress. This quick act eliminates perspiration and bad odors.

Other methods with soda crystals, ammonia or the use of a steam cleaner are possible.

Air your mattress

Moisture damages the mattress. If you never air your mattress, it may absorb a lot of moisture and this causes over months and years a pronounced wear.

To do this, remove the sheet and the mattress pad and leave it in the open air for about ten minutes. For hygienic reasons, it is often advisable to change your bedding once a week. Take the opportunity to air out your mattress at this time.

Turn over your mattress

Mattresses tend to widen over time. For a poor quality foam mattress, this problem can even occur after just a few months of use.

A good idea is to return your mattress regularly to limit this effect. Do not hesitate to do it more often than recommended. Once a month is a good pace.

However, before doing so, make sure that it is possible to do so. Some mattresses have a winter side and a summer side, while for others, the manufacturer specifies that they should not be turned over.

Use a box spring adapted to the mattress

What if the primary problem weren’t the mattress and box spring? Box spring and mattress form a pair. If the box spring is of poor quality, too worn or unsuitable, consequences will be felt on the mattress. It is even common to curse the manufacturer of the mattress when the wear is due to the box spring.

For example, if your slatted mattress has a few broken slats, the mattress will eventually go through those slats and wear out. It then becomes necessary to change the slats or the entire box spring.

The type of box spring is also important. For a pocket spring mattress, it is better to choose a box spring, while for a foam mattress, a slatted base which provides good ventilation is preferred.
