The increasingly widespread sale of kit windows makes their installation easier. For their installation, you can seek the help of a professional. This will give you assurance of optimal performance. Alternatively, you can also do it yourself if you have a knack for DIY. This last tip is, moreover, more economical. Here are the steps to follow for installing rebated windows.
Step 1: Gather the necessary materials
Installing a rebated window means removing the old one to install another. The dimensions to be used will then be the same as those of the previous installation. This task requires the use of certain tools. The first step in your work will therefore be to prepare the necessary equipment. It is :
- A chisel
- A clamp
- Of a grinder
- Tape measure
- A wood chisel
- Drill or screwdriver
To this list, it is also necessary to add a strip of impregnated foam, a foam backing and a sealant with gun. The crowbar, the clamp and the spirit level are also tools to plan. The last element mentioned (the spirit level) can be replaced by the plumb line. To complete the list, you will also have to use screws, wall plugs and a saber saw. The latter should ideally be equipped with a wooden blade.
Step 2: Prepare the rebate
Once your working material is ready, you can move on to preparing the rebate. The first step is to remove all the parts that hold the old window in place. In other words, the window must be cleared of strips, studs, sealing brackets and the support piece.
The second phase of preparing the rebate is cleaning it. Do the same for the wall opening (table).
To make the rebate really waterproof, apply a strip of impregnated foam to the masonry support. Alternatively, you can also opt for the use of putty. The result will be the same.
Step 3: Prepare the new window
The new window will also need to be primed for installation. To do this, the transport block must first be removed from under the frame. Also, the leaves must be removed. As for the preparation of the rebate, the use of impregnated foam is also required here. You just have to apply it around the window so as to make a band.
Step 4: Start by installing the rebate
After these preparation steps, you can proceed with the actual installation. Place the frame of the new window in the rebate, then keep it in place using the shims, this will allow you to check the level and plumb.
The next phase is to drill the frame and the wall. Be careful, however, not to drill the lower cross member. Otherwise, you will have to deal with water infiltration. While checking for plumb and squareness, screw in the wall plugs after installing them. The next phase is to replace the leaves.
Step 5: Install the cover profiles
Cover profiles are also called insulation profiles. For their installation, clip them into the grooves inside the window frame. This step is essential in the installation of rebated windows in order to give value to the finish. It will then be impeccable.
Step 6: Seal the outside
For the comfort of residents, the new window installed should ideally be waterproof from the outside. To give it this character, you need to use a putty joint and a foam joint. A background of these two elements must be applied to the join of the window frame. At masonry level, apply it too.
Step 7: Make the final adjustments
Check if the openings are working properly and align the leaves if necessary. These are the important steps for fitting a new rebated window. Follow these guidelines and enjoy your new installation.
