Millions of euros in sales in 2019 for the erotic online store Adam and Eve

During this first part of 2020, sales of the European market leader EDC Retail are booming due to the coronavirus crisis.

Veendam, April 10, 2020 – Beate Uhse, whose online activities were taken over by Dutch group EDC Retail last year, has had an excellent year. The turnover achieved in France via the Adam et Eve online store has amounted to 5 million euros since last August.

Partly thanks to the growth of the Beate Uhse group, EDC Retail achieved a record turnover. The European market leader sold a total of 33.4 million euros in 2019, almost 50% more than in 2018. The results for the first quarter of 2020 are also encouraging.

With 800 additional orders received every day following the coronavirus crisis, sales in France have increased by an average of 94%. We even observed a growth of 162% in just one day.

In 2019, EDC Retail welcomed nearly 250,000 new customers. Similarly, the number of regular visitors has increased sharply with a basket of around sixty euros on average spent with the online eroticism giant based in Veendam. We are seeing a change in demand, says CEO Eric Idema.

In the beginning, it was mostly loose toys that were sold, today consumers choose a full experience instead. Think for example of a combination of lingerie, sextoys and a surprise box as well as matching products from our pharmacy, such as hygiene and massage products.

Vibrators at the top of sales

Within EDC Retail, Beate Uhse a company of German origin has proven to be a great success. The online stores that are part of it, such as, have developed considerably. The 2019 turnover amounted to several million euros in France.

We have regained consumer confidence, says Eric Idema. Vibrators have been the most popular product category for years and this has not changed in 2019. Specifically, sales of air pressure vibrators, such as the Womanizer and the Satisfyer, are on the rise. booming.

In addition, the vibrating eggs were also very coveted. Idema highlights the sale of the Advent Calendar, which includes exciting toys and has turned out to be a great success. It was only online four months, but immediately generated a two percent increase in revenue, Idema says.

In order to cope with this exponential growth in sales, forty new employees were hired during the last year. As a result, EDC Retail has around two hundred employees. In addition, during periods of high activity, such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, external contractors come to reinforce the teams.

The coronavirus wave

The latter is currently the case, given that the coronavirus crisis is causing a large number of orders. Following measures taken by the government in the fight against the coronavirus on March 17, many French people found themselves confined to their homes. Since then, EDC Retail has seen a sharp increase in the number of orders. The more time passes, the more sales there are and the more the turnover increases, explains Idema.

Every day, around 1,500 to 1,800 additional orders are recorded. Normally, we see a decrease in spending during the months of March and April. We are currently seeing an average growth of 80% in turnover with peaks reaching 94%. At the moment we are working very hard to process all orders on time. To achieve this, three teams work 24/7 in the warehouse located in Veendam.

In mid-February, a shortage of sex toys was at risk, when production in China was at a standstill due to the coronavirus. In the meantime, activity and therefore production has been relaunched and the dreaded shortage is no longer relevant.

An evolution

EDC Retail is particularly observing an increase in sales of lubricants and condoms. While women buy more toys during this quarantine period, men more often opt for luxury goods for more stimulation. Especially toys that can be controlled by an app (which can even be controlled from the other side of the world) are very popular in general.

For 2020, EDC Retail expects to achieve total revenue of around 40 million.
